Buying Guide: Blade vs. Burr Grinders
Blade grinders use a blade to chop the beans up and are generally inexpensive. The problem with them is that they tend to grind the beans inconsistently. Also a finer ground takes longer to grind and because of this the blade may heat up. This will leave you with burnt coffee grinds and an unpleasant tasting coffee. This type of grinder is fine for automatic drip coffee makers. It is not typically recommended for any other type of coffee maker.
Burr grinders crush the coffee beans between a moving grinding wheel and a non-moving surface, kind of like a pepper grinder. These are the more expensive and since the grinding wheel is easier to regulate they produce a more consistent ground. There are two types of burr grinders:
- Wheel burr grind the less expensive of the two. This grinder can be very noisy. So if you get up earlier in the morning then everyone else in your household, then you may want to forgo this type of burr grinder, as it might disturb the sleeping members of your family. Also the wheel burr can be messy.
- Conical burr grinders are among the best grinders you can get. The grinder wheel spins at a lower speed then a wheel burr. As a result they are not as noisy or messy as their wheel counterpart.
Burr grinders are recommending for all types of coffee maker especially for Espresso Machines, French Presses, and Moka Pots.
What to look for in a coffee grinder?
The power of a grinder can range from 150 – 300 watts. The less expensive ones tend to have less power and as a result they jam, overheat, and burn out quicker than a grinder with more wattage. To get good use out of the coffee grinder make sure it has at least 200 watts of power.
This depends on the type of coffee maker you are using. Example for an espresso machines you would need a very fine ground and for a French press you would need a very coarse ground.
Even though it is suggested that you ground your coffee right before you brew it, if you want to grind enough coffee for the week or a group of people, then it is important to know how many coffee beans your grinder can hold at one time. Most coffee grinder’s capacity is measured in grams. About 22 g of coffee beans make an average cup of coffee; of course this could be less or more depending on taste. But this would be a good starting point to determine how many cups a particular grinder can grind.
This a nice features if you like to do other things while your grinder is working or to keep you from unintentionally grinding the coffee beans to dust.
Most Blade grinders are easily cleans with a wipe of a damp paper towel.
Depending on the type of burr grinder you have, it may take some dis-assembly or compress air to clean. Also it is suggested that you get a burr grinder with metal or glass components, because plastic cause static electricity that can make them harder to clean.
It can be a little difficult to choose a coffee grinder that will fit your needs. We hope that our best coffee grinders list will make your choice easier.

1. Baratza Forte BG (Brew Grinder) – Flat Steel Burr Coffee Grinder (with Bin only)
The Forté-BG grinder comes with 54 mm steel burrs that produce an accurate and consistent grind for a variety of manual and small batch brews. The steel burrs were specifically designed to reduce the fines, enhancing flavor in the cup. The broad range of grind (500 microns to 1150 microns) and the narrow particle distribution (lack of fines) are the hallmarks of the superiority of the Forté-BG burrs. An all-metal macro and micro adjustment system produces a positive feel and secure grind setting. The macro-adjust moves from fine to coarse grinding in 10 distinct and repeatable settings. A secondary micro-adjust further divides each of the 10 macro steps into 26 distinct settings. These steps, plus the new metal detents, enable fine-tuning with ease, dialing in the exact grind for the preferred brew method being used. The hopper holds approximately 300g of coffee. An innovative bean shutoff feature in the collar permits no-mess, no-fuss hopper removal for changing out beans. Bean “waste” (below the stopper) averages a surprisingly low 10g, once the hopper has been shut off (all weights are bean density dependent). A hopper extension is available that can add an additional 250g of capacity. The Forté-BG is calibrated at the factory to ensure an accurate range of grind. If necessary, the Forté-BG burrs can be easily re-calibrated using the special calibration tool that comes with the grinder.
