Top 11 Best Dehumidifiers 2018

Buying Guide

When picking the right dehumidifier you need to consider three factors –  size, water removal method, and energy performance.

1. Size

Best Dehumidifiers

What size of dehumidifier do you need? There are dehumidifiers of all shapes and sizes, ranging from whole house dehumidifiers, crawl space dehumidifiers, and dedicated basement dehumidifiers, to smaller dehumidifiers such as small room dehumidifiers and mini dessicant dehumidifiers.

This is crucial because dehumidifiers come in many different sizes and have different capacities. Capacity is the amount of moisture a dehumidifier collect, and it’s expressed in pints per day.

I have included the following chart that uses the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) dehumidifier sizing guidelines that will help you determine what size of dehumidifier you will need based on the space that you want to dehumidify.

Condition Without Dehumidification <2000 Sq. Ft. 2,500 Sq. Ft. 3,000 Sq. Ft. 3,500 Sq. Ft. >3,500 Sq. Ft.
Moderately Damp with Musty Odors in Humid Weather 25 pints 30 pints 30 pints 35 pints 40 pints
Very Damp with Odors and Damp Spots on Walls and Floors 30 pints 35 pints 40 pints 45 pints 50 pints
Very Wet with Sweating Walls and/or Seepage 34 pints 40 pints 45 pints 50 pints 60 pints
Extremely Wet with Wet Floors and High-Load Conditions 40 pints 45 pints 50 pints 60 pints 70 pints

2. Water Removal Method

Determine the method you will use to remove the water collected by the dehumidifier. There are three primary methods for water removal:

  • Direct Drain – A direct drain allows for continuous operation with a gravity feed to a floor-level drain.
  • Internal Pump – The internal pump automatically pumps water vertically to a water basin for continuous operation.
  • Water Reservoir – Also known as the water tray or water bucket, the water reservoir is what stores the excess moisture picked up by the coils of the unit. The reservoir can then be removed once it is full. Most units will have an auto shut-off feature, which turns the dehumidifier off until the bucket is emptied.

3. Energy Performance

Energy performance is rated by the amount of water extracted every hour versus the amount of energy consumed to do so. For maximum efficiency, look for an ENERGY STAR® qualified unit.

Once you know those three things, you will be able to pick the right dehumidifier with complete confidence.

Features to Look For

What you’ll find when researching dehumidifiers is that they come with a whole lot of additional features, like LED displays, washable air filter, handles, caster wheels and auto shut-off. Some of these features are more important than others. I’m going to explain what features you need to know about when picking the right dehumidifier for you.

Here are what I consider the key features when picking a dehumidifier.

1. Handles and caster wheels

Since most dehumidifiers are heavy and awkward, you’ll want to buy a unit that has top and side handles and caster wheels for easy mobility. I once lugged a dehumidifier without wheels on public transit and it was a huge pain in the neck (literally!). They are just plain awkward to move around, so carrying handles and caster wheels are essential in my humble opinion. I would also recommend purchasing a dehumidifier with built-in carry handles that will stay out of the way and be less prone to breaking.

2. Washable air filter

This feature is very important since it will allow you to keep the dehumidifier in good working order, while also saving you money buying replacement filters. With a washable filter, you simply remove the filter, wash it with clean water, let it air dry and then put it back in. Most manufacturers recommend cleaning the filter every two weeks for best results.

3. Auto Shut-off

I love this feature and wholeheartedly recommend you purchase a unit that has this feature. In my old apartment, we used to have a very humid bathroom (our unit would say the room had 95% humidity some nights), and we would run our dehumidifier every night after we showered. We would then go to sleep and thanks to the Auto Shut-off feature, the unit would turn off once it reached 50% humidity in the room. This meant that the unit wasn’t running all night, sucking energy, and making excess noise. Trust me on this one, you won’t regret going for this feature.
