Dehydrating your food is a great way to save yourself money and fill your pantry up with nutritious snacks that you and your entire family will love. Even though your fruits, vegetables and meats have been dried out; they are still food. With all food products you want to ensure that you are handling them with care even after preservation.
If you have spent hours and possibly even days dehydrating your food, the last thing that you are going to want to do is have to begin the dehydration process all over again or have to toss out your foods because you weren’t prepared. - If you are packaging dehydrated fruit, ensure that you have conditioned it afterwards before it’s stored. This can be done by simply putting your fruit in a mason jar, shaking it every day for seven to ten days. If you notice condensation, you will need to restart the dehydrating process.
- Ensure that your dried foods are completely cooled off. Try leaving it sit for approximately 60 minutes.
- Gather yourself air-tight containers, mason jars or freezer bags.
- Settle on a dark, dry and cool location to store your dried goods.
In order to properly store your food, it’s best to know what type of storage your food requires. For example, if you are storing sulfured fruit then you will want to do so in a non-metal container such as air-tight Tupperware or freezer bags but remember to keep in mind that you will want to remove all air from the bag before sealing and keep an eye for any condensation.
When dehydrating your food, the shelf life on your items is drastically extended. It doesn’t mean, however, that because you’ve removed all of the moisture that the food will be good forever. All things do come to an end but the dehydration process will put a stop to that for a while.

- Your dehydrated fruits and also herbs can be stored for approximately a year when following the proper storage guidelines.
- Your dehydrated vegetables and meat products such as jerk can be stored for up to six months when following the storage guidelines.
- If you are looking to preserve your products for longer, store them in a freezer and if you have opened a container of dried foods, ensure that they are stored in the freezer or refrigerator so you are preserving freshness.
It doesn’t take overly too much when it comes to storing your dehydrated foods and most of it is just general know-how, but it is important. Keep in mind to always assess your dried food before attempting to eat it. If you notice any mold, discard of it immediately and try your next batch.
